King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi was established as a legal entity under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of University Affairs, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Special Edition, Volume 103, Issue 26, on February 19, 1986.

The Institute Council appointed the Policy Committee of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi to provide advice and recommendations to the President of the Institute.

The Institute’s Policy Committee resolved to establish a drafting committee to create regulations for the recruitment of administrators for various positions.

Professor Jamrat Chaiyaphong, Chairman of the Institute Council, announced the implementation of the first regulation for the selection of the President of the Institute, titled “Regulation on the Selection of the President, 1986.”

The Institute Council announced the implementation of the “Regulation on the Selection of the Chairman of the Institute Council and Institute Council Members, 1986,” and appointed the first-ever committee to select the President of the Institute. The committee was chaired by Professor Prasert Na Nakorn, an esteemed member of the Institute Council.

The Institute Council announced the implementation of the “Regulation on the Selection of Deans, 1986,” which was later amended with minor revisions.

A Royal Decree was issued appointing Associate Professor Paiboon Hangsapruet as the President of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi. Upon the completion of his term, His Majesty graciously reappointed him for another term, which continues to the present day.

The Institute announced the implementation of the “Regulation on the Appointment of Directors and Heads of Government Agencies Equivalent to Faculties, 1986.” Later, on August 13, 1986, another regulation was introduced, titled “Regulation on the Selection of Department Heads, 1986.”

The Institute began organizing Thai Science Day at the Institute. Later, on October 1, 1986, a ceremony was held to invite people to lay wreaths in commemoration of the anniversary of King Rama IV’s passing at the King Rama IV Memorial Plaza. This event has since become an annual tradition.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the graduation ceremony, representing His Majesty the King, and presented degrees to graduates of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi for the academic year 1985 at the new building, Suan Amphon.

The Institute announced the implementation of the “Regulation on the Faculty Council, 1986” and appointed Professor Precha Kaewthong, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as the first Chairman of the Faculty Council, according to the Institute Act of 1985. He began his duties on January 30, 1987, for a term of two years.

A Royal Decree was issued appointing Professor Preeda Vibulsawasdi as a member of the Royal Academy in the field of Applied Sciences. The Institute also presented the royal kathin robes and conducted the annual kathin ceremony at Wat Botsath, a royal temple in Inburi District, Singburi Province.

Associate Professor Paiboon Hangsapruet, the President, had the honor of receiving the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the White Elephant from His Majesty the King at Dusit Thani Hall, Chitralada Palace.

The Institute established a working committee to promote and coordinate research and development activities. It also began allocating funds as the “King Mongkut’s Thonburi Research Grant” to support and encourage the growth of new researchers, as well as to stimulate both new and experienced researchers to propose research projects that would benefit the nation.

The Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi, hosted the 9th Engineering Deans’ Council Seminar, with Mr. Subin Pinitkayanon, the Minister of University Affairs, as the chairman. The event took place at Suan Bua Beach Hotel, Cha-am District, Phetchaburi Province.

– The Faculty of Energy and Materials began offering graduate diploma and master’s degree programs in Materials Technology.
– The Department of Computer Engineering admitted students for the first time.
– The Institute signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Kassel.

The Australian government, under the ASEAN-Australia Microelectronics Cooperation Program, donated a Sun Workstation 3/110 computer for integrated circuit (IC) design to the Institute. This was the first of its kind to be installed and used in Thailand.

Professor Jamrat Chaiyaphong officially opened the Automotive Technology Training Center at the Industrial Engineering Building 5. The center was established through collaboration with Daimler-Benz GmbH of Germany and Thonburi Panit Co., Ltd. Mr. Wolat was appointed as the expert in charge of the center.

Dr. Narong Nimsakul performed a mole removal surgery using a carbon dioxide laser, a device invented by Dr. Phichet Limsuwan, Associate Professor Dilok Sriprapai, and Associate Professor Paiap Rueangkaew from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi, at Bangkok Nursing Home Hospital.

Associate Professor Dr. Paiboon Hangsapruet, the President, signed a contract for the translation of textbooks for the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority Training Center.

The Ministry of Interior granted permission for the staff of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to officially register the “Prapha-Sompong Foundation” as a legal entity. The foundation’s purpose is to provide scholarships, organize training and study tours, support research, and award honors to individuals who have contributed to the reputation and benefits of the Institute and the nation.

A Royal Decree established the “Office of the Library and Information Services,” as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Volume 105, Issue 73, Pages 136-137. The office was created to serve as a central organization for managing library and information services, supporting the Institute’s educational mission. The office was divided into four sections: the Director’s Office, the Information Services Section, the Library Services Section, and the Journals Section.

The Ministry of Interior granted permission for the registration of the “Foundation for the Development of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi” as a legal entity. The foundation was established to promote and support the Institute’s operations, ensuring progress and high efficiency in both academic and other areas, as well as in providing academic services to society. The Institute has continued to carry out this mission consistently.

- The Faculty of Science was approved to separate from the Faculty of Industrial Education and Science, as announced in the Royal Gazette, Volume 107, Issue 146, dated August 15, 1990. Dr. Prungchan Wongwiset was appointed as the first Dean of the Faculty of Science.
A royal decree established the “Institute for the Development and Training of Prototype Factories” as a central organization for developing prototype factories. It also serves as a training center for designing and constructing equipment, installing machinery, operating factories, and conducting maintenance. The institute focuses on the development of products and manufacturing processes.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, established the Fluid Mechanics and Turbo Machinery Research Center. The center’s objective is to maximize the efficiency of materials, equipment, and facilities within the department.

Associate Professor Dr. Harit Sutadbutr, the President, presided over the opening of the KMUTT Child Development Center. The center was established as a welfare service for the university’s staff and is managed by the Faculty Council. It provides care for children aged 1.5 to 3 years old and is located on the first floor of the seminar building.

The Royal Decree establishing the “Faculty of Architecture” was published in the Royal Gazette, Volume 112, Issue 43 Kor, Pages 8-10.
In the 1995 academic year:
- The Faculty of Architecture began offering a Bachelor of Architecture program in Interior Architecture.
- The Faculty of Industrial Education introduced a Bachelor of Science in Printing Technology and a Master of Industrial Education in Educational Technology program.
- The Faculty of Information Technology launched a Master of Science in Information Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Continuing Program).
- The Cabinet approved the principle of the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi Act and submitted the draft to the Council of State for review and revision.

On the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the establishment of the institution, the university organized a religious ceremony, which included a food offering to 37 monks, a rite to honor the statue of King Rama IV (King Mongkut) and Ariya Phrom, as well as a ceremony to present royal decorations to government officials. Plaques and certificates of honor were awarded to individuals who had supported the institution. The day also included a tribute ceremony to honor the founder of the institution. In the evening, a Bangmod Night event was held to celebrate the occasion.

Associate Professor Dr. Phichet Limsuwan and his team received the National Invention Award 1996, Second Prize in the General Category, for their invention of a Laser Engraving Machine, awarded by the National Research Council of Thailand. Additionally, Associate Professor Dr. Chongchit Hirunlap received an Honorable Mention for the Drying Machine, an innovation supported by the Bangkok Bank Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment.

The institute organized a seminar on “Improving the Work Efficiency of Administrators at the Office of the President” at the River Kwai Village Hotel, Kanchanaburi Province. The seminar aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of administrative staff in performing their duties, explore solutions for challenges faced in their roles, and foster better relationships between division directors and department heads.

King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, in collaboration with the editorial team of the IT-11 program and the Telephone Organization of Thailand, organized a seminar on “The Role of the Media and Technology News Reporting.” The seminar was inaugurated by Mr. Jumphon Hera-Pat, Director of the Telephone Organization of Thailand, and took place at the Telephone Organization of Thailand Training Center.

King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi organized an orientation for new civil servants for the year 1996. The event took place at Chumrat Chaiyaphong Conference Room and Suan Bua Khad Hotel, Cha-am District, Phetchaburi. The program brought together civil servants from all three categories (Category A, B, and C) to engage in various activities, aiming to enhance their understanding of the university’s policies, goals, and administrative processes. The orientation also provided opportunities for participants to gain new knowledge and experiences that would contribute to better coordination and development within the institution.

King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This agreement established a collaborative partnership between the two institutions, with shared commitments to engage in various activities that would benefit the operations of KMUTT in the future. The partnership was also seen as a pilot project, serving as a model for other universities and educational institutions in Thailand to seek international collaboration and cooperation with foreign institutions.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harit Sutabutr, the President of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), officially signed an agreement with Mr. Brian Baldwin, Managing Director of Castrol (Thailand) Ltd. The agreement aimed to jointly develop the KMITT-Castrol Seminar Room, a modern and fully equipped seminar room in the Faculty of Industrial Education. The room was to be upgraded to meet the highest standards and provide facilities for both theoretical and practical training for students. This collaboration was a significant step toward enhancing the educational environment at KMUTT.

The institute held a ceremony to lay a floral tribute at the King Mongkut Memorial Statue in observance of National Science Day, at the plaza in front of the monument.

The King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi (KMITT) Book Center officially began its operations on the lower floor of the King Mongkut Memorial Building, celebrating 190 years of King Mongkut’s legacy. The center provides book sales and order services both domestically and internationally for faculty members, students, government officials, and the general public.

The institute organized a special seminar in honor of Associate Professor Dr. Paiboon Hangsapruek, the institute’s advisor and its first former president, to express gratitude on the occasion of his retirement. The seminar was held at the Jamrat Chaiyapong Conference Room. In the evening, a retirement party was hosted for Dr. Hangsapruek and other retiring officials at the Multi-purpose Hall, Building 5.

Associate Professor Dr. Haris Sutabutra, the President, presided over the memorial ceremony for King Mongkut (Rama IV) on the anniversary of his passing. The ceremony included the laying of a wreath in tribute at the King’s statue and a Buddhist prayer ceremony held at the Jamrat Chaiyapong Conference Room.

Professor Dr. Somchad Soponronrit, from the Faculty of Energy and Materials, was selected by the National Research Council of Thailand as the National Outstanding Researcher. Additionally, the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) recognized him as a Senior Research Fellow for the year 1996.

The Educational Services Division of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi invited Professor Dr. Kasem Wattanachai, then Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of University Affairs, to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Transition to the New University Entrance System.” The lecture aimed to prepare students and educators for the new entrance system, which was set to be implemented in the academic year 1999. The event attracted a large number of attendees who were keenly interested in the topic.

Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn graciously appointed General Pichitr Kullavanijaya, Vice President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute for Special Activities, as her representative to preside over the opening of the Queen’s Commemorative Garden and the exhibition “Technology for the Next Century” at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.
- Associate Professor Dr. Haris Suthapreda, the Rector, signed an agreement with Mrs. Doris Wibunsin, Director of NTU/Thailand, designating the institute as a network hub for receiving signals from NTU (National Technological University). NTU serves as a central platform for broadcasting educational content from over 50 leading universities in the United States. This initiative aims to enhance the learning experience for faculty and students by providing access to cutting-edge knowledge in information technology, science, and engineering.
- Mr. Krit Thongkhunda, a second-year special program student from the Department of Electronic Engineering, won second place in the inaugural Mechanical and Electronic Invention Contest (age group 18–25) in 1996. The event was organized by Philips Electronics (Thailand) Ltd. in collaboration with the Science Society of Thailand under Royal Patronage. His award-winning project was titled “High-Security Computer Key.”
- The Cabinet approved the draft of the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi Act, which will be forwarded to the Parliament for further consideration.
